Post-doctoral research fellowship in social/cultural studies of ethnicity, race and genetics
The Institute of Health and Society(Helsam) at the Faculty of Medicine offers a 3-years position as a post-doctoral research fellow, in the research project From racial typology to DNA sequencing: 'Race' and 'ethnicity' and the science of human genetic variation funded by the Norwegian Research Council and led by the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology.

The overall objective of the project is to shed light on interactions between social, cultural, technological and scientific aspects of the development of concepts of  “ethnicity” and “race” in physical anthropology and human genetic variation research in the period 1945-2012 and to discuss normative aspects of these interactions. The project includes a planned exhibition on the topic.

It is expected that a successful applicant will pursue a project of his/her own design. The application should include a project outline, which will be strongly emphasized in the assessment of the applications. This outline should state a research problem, describe the theoretical and methodological approach, explain what type of empirical data will be used and give a timeline. The project outline should contain an argument on how the applicant’s project is relevant for the overall project.

In addition to conducting his/her own project the research fellow should be prepared to contribute to the joint activities of the overall project along with the other participants. 

The fellow will be employed at the Institute of Health and Society at the University of Oslo, but will be working at the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology.

The fellowship period is 3 years. The main purpose of a post-doctoral research fellowship is to qualify a researcher for work in higher academic positions. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period as postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution

Qualifications and Personal Skills

The position requires completion of a doctoral degree with relevance for Institute for health and society. Personal suitability and co-operation skills will receive special attention in the selection process. Selected applicants will be called for an interview.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a doctoral degree, preferably in the humanities or social sciences, if possible combined with a background in biology or medicine.
Applicants must have submitted their doctoral dissertation for evaluation by the closing date.
A strong command of English, written and spoken, is necessary.
Experience with interdisciplinary cooperation in research is an advantage, but not a precondition
Interest in public dissemination of research output and experience with exhibitions is an advantage, but not a precondition.
Personal Skills

Personal suitability, motivation, co-operation skills and ability to work independently will receive attention in the selection process.
