The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with
internationally
competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching.
The Faculty
of Humanities and Social Sciences, in conjunction with the “Africa
Multiple”
Cluster of Excellence, is currently seeking to appoint a

Full Professor of Epistemologies of the
Global South with an Emphasis on Africa

at pay grade W3 (minimum salary per month: 6,683 €) to commence
on 1 October 2019.
This is a permanent civil service position. Additional salary
components will be negotiated separately.

Applicants need to have a distinguished track record in the study of
African epistemologies. The position will
complement existing strengths in African studies and will play a
central role in the intellectual agenda of the
“Africa Multiple” Cluster of Excellence, which is designed to break
new ground in theory and method in
African studies. We are seeking to recruit a scholar whose work
engages with the epistemological premises
and theoretical approaches in the study of Africa and, more broadly,
the Global South. We are especially
interested in approaches that view knowledge production and
knowledge practices as ongoing processes and
highlight their articulation and transformation in specific
historical, political, and cultural settings. The
position will cover a transdisciplinary field that comprises
different modes of knowledge production in and
about Africa and African diasporas. These may include a focus on
debates on “indigenous knowledges” or
the decolonization of knowledge, and approaches informed by
sociology of knowledge, postcolonial studies,
posthuman studies and/or gender and queer studies. Applicants may
have a background in philosophy,
history, the study of religion, literary or media studies,
anthropology, cultural studies, science & technology
studies, or the social sciences.

The successful candidate will cover the field of African
epistemologies in teaching and research. He or she
is expected to create synergies with one of the relevant
disciplinary units in the Faculty of Humanities and
Social Sciences (anthropology, history, philosophy, study of
religion, sociology) and may be offered
membership in the Faculty of Languages and Literatures; in the
latter case, he ore she may join one of the
disciplinary units there. He ore she will engage in collaborative
interdisciplinary research projects and
actively contribute to advancing the research agenda of the “Africa
Multiple” Cluster of Excellence.
Candidates who have received a substantial part of their academic
qualification in Africa are welcome to
apply.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the bachelor’s and
master’s programmes relating to African
studies and in the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African
Studies. He ore she will also contribute
to the curriculum of one of the disciplinary units within the
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (or in
the Faculty of Languages and Literatures) and may offer courses
relevant for the curriculum in other
faculties. Willingness to procure external funding and to be
actively involved in the bodies of academic selfadministration
is expected.

Prerequisites for this position (according to BayHSchPG Article 7
and Article 10 para 3) are a university
degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a
post-doctoral qualification to teach at a
professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of
equivalent scholarly achievement (for example as
a junior professor, or in a non-university environment) will also be
considered. A further requisite is the ability
to teach in English. The successful candidate is expected to acquire
a working knowledge of German within
three years. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can
be hired as civil servants (Article 10
para 3 BayHSchPG).

The University of Bayreuth seeks to increase the proportion of women
involved in research and teaching (in
accordance with Article 4 para 2 sentence 1 BayHSchPG) and therefore
particularly welcomes female
applicants. All qualifications being equal, severely disabled
applicants will be given priority. The University of
Bayreuth strives to further increase the diversity of its academic
staff. For this reason, scholars who can
help make the research and teaching profile of the university more
diverse are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants with children are highly welcome. The University of
Bayreuth is a member of the best practice
club Family at University, and it offers “dual career support” for
career-oriented partners of highly qualified
employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German
Rectors’ Conference (HRK) returned a
favourable review for the University of Bayreuth’s commitment to
internationalization.

Please send your cover letter and supporting documents (CV outlining
education and academic career, list of
publications, list of courses taught, a description of your
research, as well as copies of all diplomas and
certificates) to the Dean of the Faculty Humanities & Social
Sciences, University of Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth, by 5 May 2019.
Application documents cannot be returned to the applicant, and if
unsuccessful, the files will be permanently disposed of in
accordance with data protection law. Please also submit an identical
copy of your application as a single PDF file (up to 30 MB) to
