Dipesh Chakrabarty

The Planetary Age in Human History

For the past decade, historian Dipesh Chakrabarty has been one of the most influential scholars addressing the meaning of climate change and the implications of the Anthropocene for the practice of knowledge and theoretical imagination. Climate change, he argues, upends longstanding ideas of capitalism, history and globalization. This talk will introduce and elucidate the notion of a new "planetary age" in human history and discuss some of the intellectual challenges it poses to scholarship in the humanities.

A founding member of the editorial collective of Subaltern Studies, Chakrabarty is Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Services Professor of History and South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. A recipient of the 2014 Toynbee Foundation Prize, he is known for his major opus Provincializing Europe. His new book, The Climate of History in a Planetary Age is published by the University of Chicago Press in 2020.
