Science 4 Development - Building Bridges Across Disciplines
http://science4dev.astro4dev.org/registration/
/Breakthroughs from fundamental science fuel innovations in the
industry. From applications like GPS to solar panels, science and
technology are increasingly part of people’s lives in societies
worldwide. Science therefore plays a central role in the social,
economic and environmental challenges that we face today. The
specialized skill set and international network inherent to the
scientific community can be harnessed to address developmental issues
globally. This need of using science for global development is
emphasized in the United Nations’ 2030 agenda for sustainable
development, which is comprised of17 Sustainable Development Goals
<https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/?menu=1300>(SDGs). Due to the
complex nature of development, it is key to collaborate across sciences,
both natural sciences and social sciences, in order to contribute
meaningfully to the challenges set out in the SDGs./
*When:*
30-31 January 2020
*Where:*
South African Astronomical Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa
*Why: *
● Bring together experts from both science and development fields,
especially from across Africa, in an atmosphere where they can freely
discuss and find common grounds regarding socio-economic development.
● Stimulate collaborations and partnerships between scientists and
development experts or practitioners.
● Generate ideas and plans for interdisciplinary science-for-development
projects, which could be incubated/piloted within the OAD or ROA
networks, and potentially expanded globally.
*Topics:*
/These topics are meant as a guide to participants. There remains some
element of flexibility due to the exploratory nature of this meeting./
1. Development challenges that could use input from the sciences
2. Evaluation of the impact of science on development
3. Resources that could be shared across disciplines e.g. cloud
computing, large research infrastructure
4. Policy considerations for interdisciplinary development-related research
5. Best practice/examples of successful interdisciplinary collaborations
6. Bridging gaps between academia and government regarding development
goals
7. The role of industry in science-for-development
8. The role of communities in science-for-development interventions
9. Science-for-development projects “on the ground”
