Researcher for the Research Program “Legitimacy in Global Governance”

The School of Global Studies (SGS) at the University of Gothenburg invites
applications for a researcher for a period of 18 months. The position
mainly involves research, but there may also be some teaching/supervision
assignments (maximum 20% of full-time). The candidate will form part of a
research program “Legitimacy in Global Governance” (LegGov).
The School of Global Studies

The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg produces top-
quality research, teaching and public engagement on today’s key global
challenges. The staff of over 100 faculty and PhD researchers examines
global questions and their governance in disciplines and areas such as
peace and security, international relations, development studies,
anthropology, regional studies, cultural heritage, environmental
sustainability, gender, human rights and migration. These issues are
explored both generally and as manifested in different regions and
countries. The School’s work is highly international, cross-disciplinary
and policy-relevant.
Project description

The researcher is part of the research program “Legitimacy in Global
Governance” (LegGov), a six-year collaboration among researchers from the
Departments of Political Science at Lund and Stockholm University, and the
School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg. The program,
which began in January 2016, is funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (The
Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation) with Professor Jonas Tallberg as
lead coordinator and Professors Karin Bäckstrand and Jan Aart Scholte as
co-coordinators.

The purpose of the LegGov program is to offer a wide-ranging systematic
analysis of legitimacy in global governance. The program is organized
around three research themes: What are the sources of that legitimacy for
global governance institutions? By what processes are global governance
institutions legitimated and delegitimated? What are the consequences of
legitimacy (or its absence) for the functioning of global governance
institutions? Within these core themes, the program examines how legitimacy
dynamics in global governance are similar to or different from the dynamics
of legitimacy in the nation-state and other forms of governance.

The University of Gothenburg will recruit one researcher oriented toward
the second of the three program themes: strategies of legitimation and
delegitimation.
Main responsibilities

The research fellow will conduct research within the research program
“Legitimacy in Global Governance”. The researcher will be part of a
collaborative research group engaged in quantitative and qualitative
research on processes and strategies of legitimation and delegitimation in
global governance. Some funds are available for fieldwork and conferences,
but the candidate should also seek to develop research proposals that can
attract external funding.
Qualification requirements

Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants
are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from
another country at the point in time of the application deadline.
Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no
more than five years before the application deadline. An older degree may
be acceptable under special circumstances (such as sick leave, parental
leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or the like).
Assessment criteria

We seek candidates with a PhD in International Relations, Political
Science, Peace and Development Research, or a related discipline. We are
particularly interested in candidates with a background in quantitative
methods, such as qualitative and mixed-method content analysis,
process-tracing, semi-structured interviews as well as comparative case
studies. Experience of using software, such as MAXQDA or NVIVO, for large
scale data analysis is a merit.

Candidates are expected to publish in leading academic journals, and
publication potential in the field of legitimacy in global governance will
be a key selection criterion. Therefore, the candidate must also have
demonstrated excellent skills in academic written English. Precise focus of
the work to be undertaken in the research position will be negotiated.
Additional merits include capacity to work in a transnational and
cross-disciplinary team of researchers and to communicate research findings
to wider audiences beyond academia.
Terms of employment

The position is a fix-term employment of 18 months, 100 percent and it is
placed at the School of Global Studies. Start date January 1, 2019 or by
agreement. The position consist of at least 80 percent research and maximum
20 percent other duties, usually teaching or supervision.
