The Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) is a cutting-edge
teaching and research centre specialising in data and methodologies. We are
looking for a full-time researcher to work with Dr João Porto de
Albuquerque on a recently funded research unit aiming to improve the health
of people who live in slums across Africa and Asia in collaboration with
Professor Richard Lilford of the Warwick International Centre for Applied
Health Research and Delivery (W- CAHRD), University of Warwick.

Our research unit will focus on health services in slums. Many of the
world’s poorest people live in slums, over-crowded neighbourhoods often
made up of makeshift or derelict housing, without running water or
sanitation. Slums house nearly a billion people and are growing, as more
and more people are born and move to cities. However, there is little
scientific understanding about current shortfalls in provision of
healthcare in slums and how best to improve this situation. A major
obstacle for this is the lack of geospatial data on slum urban
infrastructure, healthcare services and facilities.

In order to tackle this challenge, the research fellow will work with our
team to develop innovative interdisciplinary methods to map geo-spatially
current health service delivery arrangements and understand patterns of
health service use (including equity of use) in slums in major and
secondary cities. We will create accurate maps of slums in five cities and
two continents, using collaborative and participatory mapping instruments
that combine local information to ‘ground truth’ data generated from
Earth-observation satellite imagery using open-source humanitarian mapping
tools and volunteered geographic information (e.g. OpenStreetMap).

Based at CIM, a dynamic and interdisciplinary research centre, this
position is available immediately for an initial contract of 1-2 years,
with funding already secured for a possible extension for another 2 years.
You will undertake research and project management tasks, including
development of methods for data acquisition, modelling and analysis, as
well as delivering working papers related to the project to academic and
policy audiences. You will benefit from working closely with a
multi-disciplinary and cross-sectoral research team that includes
world-leading researchers from the University of Warwick and other UK
universities, as well as the international academic organisations African
Population and Health Research Centre, the University of Ibadan,
Independent University Bangladesh and Aga Khan University.

You will have core skills in geospatial data analysis and Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), including first-hand experience of empirical
data collection, data processing, data analysis and modelling
methodologies. Desirable characteristics include familiarity with
open-source tools for humanitarian mapping (e.g. OpenStreetMap, ODK,
Fieldpapers) and programming experience with spatial data (e.g. PostGIS,
python and/or R).

This position is directed to candidates who have recently completed a
doctorate in geographic information science/GIS, quantitative geography,
computer science, sociology other relevant discipline (i.e. postdocs).
However, applications are welcomed from qualified individuals without a
doctorate with the necessary skills and profile.
