CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Post Graduate Research Fellowships

Project on ‘Punishment by Proxy:
The Value of the Bail Procedure in a Moral Economy of Justice’

The Department of Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand is looking to award two Post Graduate research fellowships to junior researchers to carry out ethnographic socio-legal research on everyday practices of criminal justice in South Africa. The project is particularly concerned with popular readings of what courts do, their ability to produce justice, and how people interact with courts.

The project seeks two junior researchers who have a keen interest in social-legal studies or legal anthropology. Previous qualitative/ethnographic research experience is desirable but not an absolute requisite. We offer and encourage the possibility for the research to be carried out as an MA or Honours research project and for the researchers to be supervised and registered within the Department of Anthropology.

The project is part of a larger international collaboration with scholars in Europe and in other African countries on questions of criminal justice in Africa. Researchers will be given the chance to present their work at least once at an international workshop.

The fellowships are for up to two years. They will cover the period of the MA or Honours degree, some extra time to expand the research, and to turn the MA/Honours research report into a publication. The monthly fellowship will be approximately R 8000.

Applications (motivation letter and CV) are due by Tuesday 8 December, 2015.
