For the Institute for Anthropological Research in Africa we are looking for a
Doctoral Researcher Energy Cultures in Urban Africa (Kinshasa)
The research unit IARA (Faculty Social Sciences) carries out empirical and theoretical research on urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa. For the new analytical strand on technology & society, we are inviting applications from scholars to carry out doctoral research on energy cultures in Kinshasa.

Project

You enroll in the doctoral study program of Social and Cultural Anthropology in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the KU Leuven.

You prepare a dissertation on urbanity and technology, tying in with the project "Comparing Technology Cultures in Urban DR Congo (1960-present): Kinshasa, Kikwit and Lubumbashi".

You become an active member of a dynamic academic research unit, which offers a stimulating work environment for scholars who want to conduct research on an international scale.

 
Profile

You obtained a Masters degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology, and distinguished yourself from the other students.

You meet the requirements to begin the doctoral training.

You are interested in scientific research.

You are a good communicator and enjoy working in team.

You are fluent in French, are willing to learn Lingala, and are prepared to conduct extensive field research in Kinshasa (at least 18 months, spread over 4 years).

 
Offer
We offer an employment as full-time doctoral researcher starting October 2014 for 4 years.
