Empa is the interdisciplinary research and services institution for material sciences and technology development of the ETH Domain.
The Technology and Society Lab (TSL) is Empa’s interdisciplinary research unit that analyzes technologies embedded in social processes, focusing on the interactions among technology, environment and society with an emphasis on material flows connected with emerging technology applications. Researcher in ICT for Sustainability (80-100%)
ICT for Sustainability is an emerging interdisciplinary research field that has substantially been shaped by the Technology and Society Lab and its ISR group in recent years. The group is shared between Empa and the University of Zurich and headed by Prof. Dr. Lorenz Hilty. As the senior research scientist of the group, you will coordinate interdisciplinary projects and develop ICT-based approaches to problems of environmental sustainability. Such problems include assessing, modelling and reducing material and energy flows or supporting users in making sustainability-oriented decisions. You will be in charge of the following tasks: Developing project proposals, managing and executing projects of the group in cooperation with other Empa Labs and projects, in particular in the context of NEST (http://nest.empa.ch) and with partners at the University of Zurich. You are expected to support the head of group in management tasks, publishing research results, supervision of students, and representation of the group.
Your profile
You have interdisciplinary experience in applying ICT-based approaches to to the domain of environmental sustainability, which may include one of the following: Modelling and Simulation, Computational Material Flow Analysis and LCA, Spatial Data Processing (GIS/Remote Sensing) or Sustainable Interaction Design. The ability to advance these approaches usually requires a background in Informatics (Computer Science and Information Systems) or other ICT-related fields of study, ideally combined with interdisciplinary experience in one of the following areas: Environmental Informatics, Energy Informatics, Technology Assessment, Computational Sustainability or Green IT.
We expect a candidate with good communication skills in German and English and a strong publication record, interested in actively contributing to the research of the group in cooperation with other Empa Laboratories and the Department of Informatics at the University of Zurich. The candidate should have sucessfully completed his/her PhD studies or be about to complete them.
Starting date: October 1, 2014 (negotiable), Place of work: Empa’s St. Gallen site.
