Postdoctoral Position in Social Studies of Innovation in East Africa

The Centre for Engineering in Society at Concordia University in Montreal is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Associate.  The appointment will begin on 1 September 2014 for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension for a second year.

The Postdoctoral Associate will design and conduct a synergistic research program related to his or her own expertise and a project sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation entitled, Capacity Building in Computer Science as a Driver of Innovation.  This project seeks to understand how African computer science is developing in Kenya and Uganda and the role it plays in supporting local innovation.  It is a collaboration between Concordia University and the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes at Arizona State University. In addition to gaining research training and experience, the position provides unique opportunities including: learning and utilizing video editing techniques, supervising undergraduate research assistants, and the possibility of teaching classes on technology and society.

We seek candidates with a PhD in Science and Technology Studies, Development Studies, Sociology, Geography or a related field with experience in qualitative or ethnographic research. Candidates must have the PhD in hand by the start date.  The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience working in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.  Experience conducting research on computer science or information technology, or previous degrees in these areas would be a bonus.
